Zofran Kidney Defects
Babies exposed to Zofran during pregnancy may suffer kidney defects
The anti-nausea medication Zofran (ondansetron), manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, was approved in 1991 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help alleviate vomiting and nausea in postoperative patients and patients undergoing chemotherapy. However, babies exposed to Zofran in the womb may suffer kidney defects.
Between 2010 and 2013 ondansetron side effects recorded in the FDA adverse event database were analyzed by reporters at the Toronto Star. The paper found 20 side effect reports concerning women from various locations across the country who took Zofran to treat morning sickness during pregnancy and gave birth to a baby with heart defects, oral clefts, and kidney defects. Of these babies exposed to Zofran in the womb, six babies suffered from “fetal growth restriction,” four others weighed only 4.5 pounds, and two more babies were listed as deceased, the Star reported.
The Zofran kidney defect attorneys at Bernstein Liebhard LLP encourage anyone who suffered a kidney defect allegedly due to exposure to Zofran while in the womb to call 1-844-4-ZOFRAN for more information about filing a Zofran kidney defect lawsuit, and a free case evaluation.
Zofran Kidney Defects
Kidney defects in babies exposed to Zofran during pregnancy may include one or both kidneys.
Kidney defects suffered by babies exposed to Zofran during pregnancy may involved one or both kidneys and include abnormalities of the urinary tract, urinary “reflux” that causes urine to flow back into the kidneys, as well as a defect that prevents the normal flow of urine from allowing the kidneys to drain, causing them to enlarge.
The use of Zofran by women during pregnancy has also been associated with an increased risk of heart defects, musculoskeletal defects, cleft lip and cleft palate, and even death.
